MGSV The Phantom Pain Review Pt. 3

As I progress through the game, I feel like I don’t want to stop, and that sensation I haven’t felt with a game in a long time. I honestly don’t know why it took me so long to play this installment, but I’m enjoying it now, alongside you, my esteemed legends.

During this third part, things happened that I never expected to happen. These missions completely took me by surprise, and I’m still amazed, so I invite you to keep reading about what happened in each of the missions.

Episode 6 – Where Do The Bees Sleep?

This mission sounded quite simple, go to an enemy base and recover a weapon called “Killer Bee,” pretty straightforward, and I thought I could breeze through it in the same timeframe as the previous missions, but how wrong I was…

The mission starts with us at a considerable distance from our objective, and with several outposts between our destination and our poor souls. Many of these outposts can be bypassed, but there’s one in particular that’s like a pit you simply can’t pass by, at least I couldn’t, so if someone managed it, leave it in the comments to report you because hacker.

This pit is where I lost the most time, trying to go unnoticed and figuring out how to bypass it, but realizing it was practically impossible, I decided to go full Wild West and shoot lead left and right. In addition to this, I took the opportunity to ruin the place’s communications, in case I had to pass through again and got discovered, it wouldn’t be as bad, but still, I missed some antennas and couldn’t make it.

Further into the mission, and dodging a couple of watchtowers along the way, I was finally close to my objective, and here’s where the intimidation began. There’s a helicopter very similar to the Hind-D hovering over the area, and if it spots you, you’re toast. Besides this, we have to overcome other watchtowers to get there, which doesn’t make it easier.

I was discovered a couple of times in this area, although I must thank that the helicopter didn’t spot me. And as soon as I reached the destination, boy was I surprised and even more intimidated. The weapon I was supposed to recover was in the basement of a highly guarded archaeological complex. And seeing that many soldiers broke my spirit. Of course, I got discovered again and ended up as holey as a colander.

But this didn’t stop me, I continued the game, sneaking into the area (and sh***ing myself with fear) until, finally, I could extract the prisoner who knew the location of the weapon and recover the Killer Bee.

Upon exiting, I didn’t expect what happened. A bunch of Skulls possessing soldiers, killing those who resisted, and me, a poor scared girl in charge of our Snake’s security, it’s too much responsibility. They gave me permission to use the Killer Bee, and without thinking twice, I did it, still, the Skulls blew me away. But on my second try, I managed to return the favor with a few missiles directed at their heads.

I took advantage that at the end of the fight they were all unconscious to loot the area, and I got a good loot.

Episode 7 – Red Brass

My next mission was a big relief, I just had to finish off three poor devils in three different areas, although I thought they were in the same place. Finding them was quite easy, finishing them off without raising alarms not so much. So, making use of my favorite tactic (being a ruthless assassin), I faced the enemies until I finished my first objective.

Then I headed to another camp to look for my second victim. Seeing the site from a distance, I mistook my target for an ordinary soldier, and ended up setting off the alarms for everyone in the area. After running away for a while and hiding, they finally calmed down, and I used my assassin tactic again to finish off everyone in the camp.

Finally, I headed to my last objective, which was located in none other than the prison where we were supposed to rescue the engineer (it brought back memories of trauma). But before infiltrating, a bear distracted me, and I had to deal with it.

Once I defined my infiltration route, I got down to business, and as soon as I reached the top of the prison, without thinking much and without suffering, I took out my sniper rifle and sent a love letter to that soldier (very Sniper Wolf style). And so I finished this mission, fleeing the place because obviously everyone heard the shot.

Episode 8 – Ocuppation Forces

I must say this mission was quite entertaining, I had to eliminate a colonel and prevent some tanks from establishing themselves in an enemy fort. In short, wreak havoc, and what better way to cause panic in the enemies than with a rocket launcher. Thanks to the advice of a kind subscriber, I developed the rocket launcher, and this mission was my chance to use it.

When infiltrating the village (and after killing a couple of enemies), I got some documents that established the route of the tanks. So, I brought down a couple of houses and blew up a communication antenna to create a distraction, there was a prisoner that needed to be rescued, and after killing a couple of enemies, I managed to extract him with the Fulton.

After this came the fun part, the tanks were already in front of the village, so I quickly equipped my rocket launcher and shot at the first tank, which later also hit me back (I don’t know how Snake survived that missile). I managed to destroy two out of the three tanks, and I caught up with the third one in the village where it wasn’t supposed to reach.

There I committed my attack, and died, but because God is great, Snake resurrected from the dead to continue launching missiles at that tank, until I finished it.

Episode 9 – Backup, Back Down

The truth is that I don’t perform very well under pressure, and this mission really made me feel pressure. Here we have to destroy tanks and trucks to weaken the Soviets and give the guerrilla an advantage, the problem is that they put a timer in the corner of the screen, and you have to destroy as many as possible until time runs out.

I destroyed a couple of tanks and a truck when my timer ended, but this mission is quite simple.

Secondary Mission 82 – Contact Emmerich

Right after finishing the previous mission, we’re informed that a scientist who wants to defect has contacted us, and it’s none other than Huey Emmerich, the engineer in charge of creating Metal Gear, and the person who agreed to the review by XOF and ended up in the destruction of the Base we had built with Miller.

Miller doesn’t hold Huey in high esteem because he thinks he’s a traitor, still, he suggests we go rescue him to catch up with the engineer and find out where his loyalty lies. So that’s how we embark on the mission to contact him, but our path is interrupted by a very skilled sniper.

Episode 11 – Cloaked in Silence

In the middle of a field with some archaeological constructions, we’re welcomed by the famous Quiet, with a shot that almost knocks us down. Snake hides behind a stone while we process what’s happening.

I had been told that you can get rid of Quiet by requesting supplies, but what they didn’t tell me is that you can’t reach the supplies because Quiet is on top of a very high structure. The way to find out where the lady is is by letting the reflection of the sun make contact with the glass of her scope to reveal her location. Another way is to listen to the sound of her voice, since Quiet isn’t as quiet as she looks, the girl likes to sing.

Once I located her, I marked her on the map, and laughing devilishly, I requested supplies that would fall directly on her. So it was, while I let Snake be seen so that Quiet wouldn’t move from her place, I watched as the supply box fell slowly on her, giving her a bump bigger than her rifle.

Quiet falls unconscious on the ground, and we approach to see if she’s okay. That’s when Miller and Ocelot call us, one saying we should send her to St. Peter, the other saying we should send her to the base because she might be useful. Quiet starts moving as if she’s about to shoot herself, but we stop her, and we load her onto the helicopter, but in the middle of the flight, the girl disappears.

Then a cutscene jumps at us, and surprise! Quiet was there all along, she just wanted privacy so that her boobs wouldn’t be seen. Then we realize that Quiet isn’t against us, but rather she’s already switched sides, when two I-don’t-know-what-they-are start attacking us. Quiet grabs her rifle and takes care of relaxing the helicopter pilot.

Then, upon arriving at the base, the dispute continues until Snake comes out and tells them to stop fooling around, and that Quiet is going to the dungeon.

Secondary Mission 82 – Contact Emmerich (This time for real)

The downside of Quiet’s interruption is that we had to go through it all over again, but once we reached the power plant, it turns out that Huey is taken away, and we stand there like idiots watching them load him onto a Gear and take him to another village. So much suffering for nothing…

Episode 12 – Road to Hell

And here I began my last mission of this 3rd part, and it wasn’t easy at all, as the place where they took Huey was not only guarded by soldiers, there were also Sentry Gears all around the perimeter, and a helicopter flying over the area. Extracting Huey definitely wasn’t an easy subject, and getting to the site was a journey.

Once we arrived and scanned the area, we realized we had no idea where they had Emmerich, so after infiltrating and taking a couple of soldiers hostage, they revealed his location, a hangar that had a couple of Gears and a bunch of soldiers (not to mention a sniper) guarding his lab.

Infiltrating wasn’t an easy task, and after leaving some unconscious, and killing others (and dying in the process), we finally reached the blessed hangar. Huey seemed to be in his element, and not at all concerned about wanting to escape, but as soon as he saw us, and it took him some time to recognize us as Snake, he started to panic, and the idiot started talking when we were trying to extract him.

Pequoid was waiting for us at the landing zone, and they give you the option to flee with a Gear, but the truth is the machine is quite noisy and I didn’t want the engineer to get killed, so I decided to make a getaway the old-fashioned way. I carried Huey on my shoulders until we reached the landing zone, but just then (and I really didn’t expect it) Skull Face arrives, with none other than Psycho Mantis, and (hold your breath here) the ST-84 Metal Gear, better known as Sahelanthropus.

After his speech, Skull Face leaves the big machine in charge of turning us into mush, and our duty, besides getting Huey out of there, is to survive. So, carrying the man on our shoulders, we start running as if there was a 99% discount at the Steam store, and we manage to be rescued by Pequoid, and to leave unscathed, we use the helicopter’s machine gun to teach the Metal Gear a lesson.

An here’s where my last mission of this 3rd part began, and it wasn’t easy at all, since the place they took Huey was not only guarded by soldiers, but Gears as vigilantes through the entire place, and a helicopter flying the zone. Huey definitely was not an easy subject to save, and arriving to the place was a journey.

It’s been the most intense gaming session so far…

And the most mentally demanding, The Phantom Pain has me hooked to a point where I don’t want to stop playing, but it’s necessary to do so, and proof of this was the 7 hours of gameplay I went through and managed to summarize in an hour for our YouTube channel.

I continued some side missions, and I’ve been told I need to unlock missions 46 and 45, so I’ll take care of that off-camera. On Wednesdays, there’s a The Phantom Pain stream on our Twitch channel, so you’re invited to watch live as I flee for my life and they put the chicken hat on me.

I hope you liked this summary, here are the links to the previous parts if you’d like to read them as well:
